Flag Program Preserves History

The NSCDA Flag Program was presented May 14 by Huntington Colonial Dame Dixie Wilson at the Annual Meeting of NSCDA-WV held at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston. “Flags are symbolic in history as symbols of the heritage and national spirit of a country”, Mrs. Wilson said.

The FLAG PRESENTATION is a favorite program in area schools. The Viking Flag, for example, which features a raven, was used by Leif Ericson 500 years ago before the arrival of Columbus in 1492. The raven became one of the national symbols of Great Britain. The Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain, was first flown at the Jamestown Settlement, the first permanent English colony.

The famous colonial “Don’t Tread on Me” flag was also displayed by Mrs. Wilson, a flag that became the symbol of the rallying cry of the patriots in the American Revolution who protested taxation without representation. Mrs. Wilson recently presented the historic Flag Program to the General Lewis Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution in Lewisburg, WV.
