The National Society of Colonial Dames leads the nation in historic preservation.

Founded in 1891, NSCDA assists in the operation of 87 historic properties and 30,000 artifacts and art works all across America. The first museum house saved was in New York close to 125 years ago.

The Colonial Dames of West Virginia saved the historical Craik House from demolition in the 1970s in Charleston, WV. This famous house was built in 1834 by a cousin of George and Martha Washington. Craik-Patton is one of the few historical houses with a full time director, Mr. Paul Zuros. Craik-Patton is the headquarters of NSCDA-WV and the meeting place for historical tours and a variety of cultural and community events.

Recently, literary lovers gathered at Craik-Patton to celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s literary contributions to the world and to view a page from Shakespeare’s Fourth Folio.
